California Thursdays Comes To Vista & San Diego!

March 17th, 2016

A shot of a green bell pepper laying on its side.On Thursday, March 17th, WaveCrest Cafe, the Nutrition Services department of Vista Unified School District, joins a network of 12 San Diego County school districts to launch California Thursdays. The statewide effort includes 58 districts across California in an effort to commit to serving more and more food from California-based growers and suppliers.

With a tag line proclaiming, “this is what local looks like,” the initiative hopes to inform and inspire students, teachers and families to have a greater knowledge of where their food comes from, and to see the impact of supporting California based food providers. The initiative, created by the Center For Ecoliteracy, has drawn rave reviews across the country for its ability to connect the benefits of schools utilizing food sourced closer to the districts. Not only do students receive fresher food and have an awareness of where that food is from, but the California economy is positively impacted by the efforts.
A San Diego-specific website has been created by the Center For Ecoliteracy to provide more information and resources to San Diego County based students and families. To visit the site and learn more, click here.
We’re thrilled to be part of this statewide campaign, and even more to see that with our peers around the county, San Diego is becoming a model for school nutrition programs across the country.
